Born into the trade.
UpKeep Properties is a family business in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, run by Charles Goodman and his wife. Nine years of hands-on work, a crew that shows up, and a company built to be a ministry as much as a career.
The Goodmans · Elizabethtown, KYMom painted. Dad ran electrical. Granddad built houses. The other granddad ran septic, gas and water. One uncle plumbed, the other did the dirt work and concrete.
Charles grew up on those job sites. It's what he knew, and it's what he liked. He tried the other path first: public jobs, including a position with the City of Elizabethtown. It didn't fit. He is not built to sit in one position and work for someone else.
So he and his wife made a deal. They would pray about it, and if enough work came in to be booked out three months, he could quit. They prayed for a few weeks. Within a month or two UpKeep was booked out for half the next year, and he turned in his notice.
Today the company does remodeling and restoration, decks and covered porches, pole barns and garages, roofing and siding, excavation, snow removal, outdoor living and property maintenance across Central Kentucky and the Louisville metro, for homeowners and for the investors, landlords, agents, banks and insurance companies who need a contractor they can hand a property to.
"We built this to pay the bills and feed our family, sure. But it's also how we get to meet people, help people, and tell them about Jesus and what He's done for us. It's been a blessing."
Charles is 27, a husband and a father, and the guy who answers the phone.
